  ANTI-TOBACCO AND ANTI-VAPING CAMPAIGN

The National PTA, and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids are committed to educating youth, parents, school boards and local officials about the dangers of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products. Your PTSA is running its own campaign beginning this February!

*At our next general meeting on February 15th at 6:30 p.m. in the school library, we will host a guest speaker on the topic of tobacco use and vaping among our youth. Stacey King is a licensed clinical social worker and the substance abuse prevention specialist for the Chantilly Pyramid.

You must be 18 or older to attend. Ms. King will discuss the harms of tobacco use and vaping and will provide information about the latest trends in tobacco/vape use in our community. She will also talk about ways parents can initiate productive conversations with their children. There will be time for a question-and-answer session, and literature will be available in both English and Spanish. Light refreshments and student-provided childcare will be provided.

A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

Happy Snow Day!  Wishing all a fun and happy day of rest and play.  Be safe!  We look forward to seeing all of our Chargers back at school on Monday, January 22 for a B Day (periods 2, 4, 6, 8).  Have a great weekend!

Drop off and Pick Up Safety Reminders:

During periods of colder temperatures and inclement weather we are noticing heavier traffic at drop off and pick up times. We enncourage students to take their assigned bus, carpool, and remember to drive safely at all times.

Please note that while tardies for late arrival due to traffic are unexcused, we want all students and staff to arrive safely. We have seen an increase in risky behavior at drop off, including students crossing Stringfellow Rd. through traffic, and cars dropping off in the middle of intersections and at the median.  A few reminders:

  • Plan to arrive early: the best time to drop of smoothly is before 7:45 AM
  • Drop off only in designated areas - not on Stringfellow Road or West Lot (baseball park)
  • Follow directions of crossing guard and security staff
  • Do not pick up in parking lot before 3:10 PM
  • Park only in designated Visitors spots at all times. Numbered spaces are assigned to staff and students.

As always, I welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions. Please reach out to me at any time. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

Charger Headlines: Academic Advising Mini-Conferences (rising 10-12th grade only)

Academic Advising is in full swing at Chantilly HS, and we’re excited to offer mini-conferences for families this year.  These conferences provide the opportunity for students and parents to meet briefly with their school counselor for the purpose of face-to-face discussion around course selections for the 24-25 school year. The intent of these conferences is to both:

1) provide additional opportunity for school-home partnering around academic advising

2) improve accuracy of staffing needs before decisions impacting teachers must be made in March.

The mini-conferences will be held on:

  • Monday March 4 between 8:30-11 and 1:45-3:15 and
  • Wednesday March 6 between 3:30pm-6:30pm

It is important to us that each student takes courses that are challenging for them while also allowing for balance between academics and outside demands and interests.

You must reserve a spot through Signup Genius (see link below). One spot per student.

Directions:

  • Use the embedded sign-up genius link.  Find your student’s counselor and your preferred time slot
  • Choose the 10-minute time slot that works for you.
  • In the “My Comment” section that comes up after you choose the desired time, please put your student’s name and then hit “Sign Up Now”.
  • If you have more than one student at Chantilly, you may sign up for a second slot. Please put a different student name in each time slot.

If you sign up for a spot and your plans change, please be sure to delete your appointment so others can use that time slot.  We look forward to collaborating with you and your child and we begin our preparations for the 2024-25 school year.

College Night

On January 11th, Chantilly High School hosted our annual college admissions panel for Junior families featuring representatives from four universities: University of Virginia, University of Kentucky, George Mason University, and Radford University. The panelists covered various topics including research tips, college application preparation, acceptance strategies, and final college selection. This event provided valuable information and resources for Juniors and their families navigating the college admissions process. Please reach out to Maggie Rodriguez, College/Career Specialist, [email protected] for more information regarding this program and the many others she offers throughout the year for students and families.

Any college-bound student — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form.

The form is currently available for short periods of time while it is being updated to provide a better experience. Learn more about the 2024–25 FAFSA form.

A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

It has been a great week to be a Charger and one of our few, five day weeks during the winter months. A few highlights:

Highlights

  • Student Voice: Throughout the week, I have enjoyed the opportunity to talk with our students in our three Leadership classes, engage with our SEALs, and have conversations with English DE students regarding topics they are passionate about. Our Charger voices are positive and powerful. It has inspiring to hear their ideas about ensuring all students feel safe, welcome, and included. I am excited to collaborate with students on next steps.
  • Academic Advising: Academic advising is in full swing for the 24-25 school year. I enjoyed visiting with our future Chargers throughout the past week at Franklin, Rocky Run and Carson middle schools. Our class of 2027, current freshman, met to review course selection and our entire student body attended our Electives fair this week to explore options for next school year. Ms. Rodriguez in our College and Career Center hosted a very well attended Junior College Readiness night with Deans from GMU, UVA and Kentucky. Our Chantilly Academy will host an open house on January 18 from 6:30-8 PM. Throughout this advising period that continues until early March, our teachers are connecting with students 1:1 to support their individual goals and aspirations. Be sure to check in with your student about the advising process and don't hesitate to reach out to our amazing school counseling staff with questions.

Attendance Notification Updates:

Attendance matters! As a part of our continued efforts to communicate with families and students about the importance of consistent student attendance, we have been sharing several regular reports.

Weekly Tardy Emails:  All Chantilly families should be receiving Tardy notification emails each Monday for their student(s). These emails are intended to keep families informed, much like the weekly SIS emails, and can serve as an opportunity to have conversations about attendance at home. If any consequence or follow-up is needed, the student's administrator will be in contact with the parent/guardian.  The tardy notification email address used for mail merges is not monitored regularly. Please follow instructions on the letters and direct all inquires to your student's administrator or school counselor.

Attendance Report Card: Every Chantilly student will receive an attendance report card for their first semester at the end of second quarter. Please look for this report card to come via email during the first week in February. Report cards will include the student’s attendance status (Chronically absent, At risk to be chronically absent, or Not at risk).

Chronically Absent status is defined as missing more than 10% of the school year for any reason, excused (EXC) or unexcused (UNX).

Chronically Absent rate only considers full day absences, and is based on a 180-school day year meaning missing 18 days or more will cause a student to be CA. (This can be as little as just 2-3 days per month.)

You can review all Chantilly HS Attendance procedures on our website.

As always, I welcome your feedback, observations and questions.  Please share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here.  I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.
