A Note from Dr. Goodloe:

Dear Charger families,

It has been a wonderful week of connecting with students and families at Chantilly. A few highlights:

  • I enjoyed watching our Chantilly Boys Varsity Volleyball team victorious in a competitive match against Madison Monday night at South Lakes HS. Our Chargers won in 5 sets and it was clear throughout the competition that the team is committed to hard work and enjoys being together. It was great to see our team having fun in their inaugural season. Go Chargers!
  • We had large turnouts for our "Paying for College" seminar and Common App work sessions earlier this week. Thank you to our College and Career Specialist, Maggie Rodriguez for hosting and supporting our students and their families.
  • Our Admin Team and Student Services Department celebrated Chantilly's 10 College Board National Merit Semi-finalists, and 44 Commended Scholars (picture above), on Tuesday with a gathering and a sweet treat. We are so proud of the achievements of these outstanding students.
  • The hallways of Chantilly have been transformed into an art gallery by Ms. Kennedy's Studio Art classes. Students have been collaborating to create murals showcasing texture and perspective using our hallway walls and colored tape (pictured below). The creativity on display is amazing.
  • We are committed to fostering a school culture founded on collaboration and sense of belonging at Chantilly. This week our upper class peer mentors will connect with their class of 2028 mentees in 9th grade homerooms to share student led activities focused on strengthening student relationships. I was in awe of our 11th and 12th grade students' engagement with our mentor trainer and their commitment to their peers when I attended their opening session earlier this week.

1st Quarter Grading Dates:

At Chantilly we believe grades are a key tool to communicate about student learning.  This week all teachers emailed out student progress reports through SIS.  Be sure to check your email! Please note the following important dates regarding grades from Student Services. September 25- Emailed progress reports for all students from teachers.  If you didn’t receive (must have email listed in SIS), please contact your student’s sub school for assistance. Sub school contacts can be found at the bottom of this email.

PSAT/SAT Day

Chantilly HS(along with all FCPS high schools)  will administer the PSAT and SAT on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

  • All 10th and 11th graders will take the Digital PSAT.
  • Only registered 12th graders will take the Digital SAT.
  • All 9th graders and 12th graders NOT taking the SAT DO NOT report to school.

For students who are testing, we will operate on a two hour early dismissal; students will be dismissed at 12:55.  Students who are testing MUST bring their FCPS issued Chromebook fully charged and a charger.  We will not have loaner computers or chargers except for students who do not have a FCPS issued device.

High school academy courses will not be held on October 9, 2024, and all high school shuttles are canceled for the day. High school academy staff will support based school activities.

Fall 2024 SEL Screener

Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:

  • Self-Management & Responsible Decision Making
  • Social Awareness & Relationship Skills
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Supportive Relationships
  • Belonging
  • Cultural Awareness & Action *grades 6-12 only
  • Challenging Feelings

Chantilly HS students who were not opted out will complete the Fall Wellness Screener on October 17, 2024 during homeroom .  We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early December. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Once we have an updated timeline, we will provide communication via this weekly message.  For more information, please visit this webpage.

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

  • Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
  • Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
  • Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
  • Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
  • A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
  • Alcohol or drug use.
  • Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family.
  • Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Click here for staff contact information to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Parents/caregivers no longer need to opt in their child to receive Hazel Health’s teletherapy services. This will make the referral process easier for families. Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide them with a safe space to address concerns such as:

  • Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
  • Anxiety, worry, fears
  • Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships
  • Academic stress

You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting our school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.

Visit the FCPS Teletherapy webpage for more information.

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your family's health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. Be wise and immunize!

Sean listos, vacunense!

*Partial Absences: To report late arrivals, early dismissals, or to update already submitted attendance, please contact the appropriate sub-school directly. Contact information is listed below.

Clinic Reminders - Attendance and Check Out Procedures

Early Checkouts

  1. Parents are required to furnish a written excuse to OR call the student’s sub school including date, time, reason for the early dismissal and phone number for verification.
  2. Please notify your student’s Subschool of an early dismissal by 9:30 AM. At the time of dismissal, if there is no electronic pass in the system, your student MUST check out with their Subschool.

Sick Students leaving school

  1. The student MUST check out of school through the clinic when leaving the grounds because of illness. (Please do not call your student’s Subschool to dismiss your student for illness).
  2. When a student is sent home or a doctor’s attention is required, the SUBSCHOOL OFFICE will be notified at the end of the day by the clinic. (Attendance will be updated accordingly)

️ Parent/Caregiver Checklist: Have You Completed These Important Forms?

We understand that the multiple school forms caregivers receive during the first weeks of school can feel overwhelming, but each one helps set your child up for a successful school year! If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, please contact the front office for an activation code and follow the directions on the SIS ParentVUE Account webpage.

🩹 Immunization Requirements

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to the Chantilly HS front office.

Alternative immunization documents (below) may also be provided, but they may not be uploaded in ParentVUE:

A healthcare provider’s written statement specifying all administered immunizations.

A healthcare provider’s written statement of a permanent or temporary medical exemption.

A notarized Religious Exemption form objecting to the administration of immunizations due to conflicts with religious tenets or practices.

Find more information on immunizations

📋 Permission Forms

Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Parents can opt their child in or out of resources including online educational tools, school counseling services, and tutoring services. They can also change how student information is managed. Visit the Parent Digital Consent webpage to access the system. See how to use the tool

Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. A printable version of the document with a signature sheet is available on the SR&R webpage. This form should be signed and returned by Monday, September 30.

No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Parents/caregivers no longer need to opt in their child to receive Hazel Health’s teletherapy services. This will make the referral process easier for families.
