Chantilly High School is proud to partner with Food For Neighbors (FFN) to help feed our local students who deal with food insecurity because even in counties as wealthy as Arlington, Fairfax and Loudoun at least one in four kids in our area are struggling with hunger.

Food for Neighbors is a local organization addressing this problem by collecting food from our community via the Red Bag Program and donating directly to our local schools. The food is then distributed to our students every week through our food pantry.

We hope you will consider participating in the Red Bag food collection program. You can make a difference in a local student’s life by simply adding a few extra items to your shopping cart every 2 months.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Request a reusable Red Bag here and Food For Neighbors will drop it off at your house.
  2. Fill the Red Bag with food items that are listed on a tag on that bag.
  3. Put the Red Bag outside your front door in the morning on the next bag collection day (which is Saturday, April 27th). And don’t worry, they send reminders.

Your Red Bag will be picked up from your house, the food sorted at a local school and delivered directly to the school food pantry at CHS. As an added benefit, you can get a tax deduction for the food that you donate!

With your help, even more kids can be fed. For more information on the Red Bag program click hereCheck out what items FFN collects as they are targeted to ready-made, individually packaged food items that students and teens can eat on-the-go or with little preparation.

The organization also offers volunteer opportunities including Driving to pick up filled Red Bags and Sorting the donated food during the Red Bag Day events. Visit the FFN FAQ page to find out more about and to sign up to volunteer in these 2 very important roles. This is a great way for students to receive community service hours, too.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact ; Nick Thayer [email protected] (Social Worker), Heather Ellison [email protected] (FFN Area Manager) or Karen Joseph [email protected] (FFN Executive Director)

Thanks for helping us provide food to students who need that extra support!

A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

It is great to be a Chantilly Charger! We have had a fantastic week of learning and activity at Chantilly and are looking forward to a great weekend ahead celebrating with our Seniors at Prom at Sweeney Barn Saturday evening.  We kicked off the weekend and district play for our spring sports with a Spring Activities Pep Rally earlier today hosted by Chantilly Leadership which included an awesome dance performance by members of our Chantilly STEP team. Earlier this week, our friends and future Chargers from Brookfield Elementary School visited with our Chantilly Scholars to look ahead to high school opportunities including a tour of our Chantilly Academy. And it was a pleasure to connect with our class of 2028 from Rachel Carson MS on a visit along with Mr. Shin and Mr. Bowerman showcasing the great opportunities to get involved at Chantilly for our future students. I am energized each day by the connections our students are making with one another, and in the community. #LeadtheCHARGE

Visual and Performing Arts:

On April 5, the Chantilly community came together to celebrate the arts at the annual Chantilly Pyramid Art Show. This exciting event showcased the creative talents of students from Brookfield Elementary, Greenbriar East Elementary, Greenbriar West Elementary, Lees Corner Elementary, Poplar Tree Elementary, Franklin Middle, Rocky Run Middle and Chantilly High School. Visit here to see more!

Our Spring Main Stage performances of  the musical Anything Goes opens on Thursday, April 18. I cannot wait to see our talented Chargers performing. Tickets are going fast, especially for Friday night's Cappies performance. For tickets and additional information, visit www.chantillydrama.org

Month of Military Child Spirit Week and Purple Up!

This April, we celebrate children of our service members and veterans whose sacrifice and support allow their parents to serve our Nation and protect children everywhere. At Chantilly we are grateful for our military connections and the service of our families. Purple Up is the campaign that propels activities throughout the Month of the Military Child to honor,
acknowledge, and support Military Connected Youth in our schools and communities. A Military Connected Youth is a child or adolescent with a close family member (parent, step parent, sibling, step-sibling, cousin) or
friend serving in any branch of the United States Armed Forces and any status, Active Duty, Reserve, or National Guard. Military Connected Youth face unique challenges. These youth deserve our support as they support their family members who serve. We look forward to celebrating Purple Up Day on April 17 and encourage all in our school community to wear purple to show their support.

Attendance Matters! Every student, every day!

A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

It has been great to welcome our Chargers back to school after spring vacation and a strong start to the home stretch of the 23-24 school year. With only 9 weeks of school (and less for seniors), it is so important that our students are at school, attending class, each and every day!  Our team of administrators and counselors will be supporting students who demonstrate a high number of absences and regular late arrivals to school or classes throughout the coming weeks and we will reach out to families to keep you informed.  Thank you for your partnership! Attendance Matters.

Principal Feedback Survey

All Chantilly HS parents/guardians were sent an email that included a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the school principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school. Today is the last day to complete the survey. I value your feedback!

Eclipse Safety Information for 4/8

As many of you know, a total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable in our area. The eclipse will begin around 2:00pm and conclude around 4:30pm.  While this is a rare and exciting event, our students’ safety must be our priority. For your reference, here are some resources shared by FCPS, including how students can safely view the solar eclipse at home, as well as eye safety information. Peak viewing time will occur after Chantilly dismissal, and we encourage students to safely view from home.

Thank you Librarians and A.P.s!

We are so grateful to our outstanding leaders in our Library, Ms. Zemba, Ms. Schoenberger, and Ms. Hackett and all of our amazing Chantilly administrators.  It has been a pleasure to celebrate National School Library Day - April 4 and National Assistant Principals' Week and recognize how each of our staff members Lead the CHARGE every day.

A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

I don't know about you, but for me, it feels like the school year is flying by! Spring is here and today marks the end of the third grading quarter, which means we have just about 9 weeks left of the 23-24 school year. There are many great things to come, including celebrating our class of 2024 graduation later this spring.

This week we recognized student appreciation week with spirit days and lunch time games.  Our Chargers are our "WHY" for our work and our staff appreciates the unique gifts each student brings to the Chantilly community. Thank you for sharing them with us!

As we transition to the last quarter of the year, we will be sharing updates with you about student academic progress and attendance. We recognize that as we move into the busy assessment season, at times student schedules are impacted. Our commitment to our students is that we will do our best to maintain our regular schedule and engaging activities in classes through the end of the year. Daily, on-time school attendance remains critical to student well-being and achievement, and we ask for your partnership in ensuring that every student attends every day! Please look for updates on attendance procedures, after school activities, and assessment schedules following spring vacation.

A Message from Your SAPS ~ Is Vaping Dangerous?

Vaping has become very popular, especially with young people ages 12+. The number of lung- related issues is rising and its just going to keep rising. As of 2019 57 deaths have been related to vaping . As of January 2020, there have been over 2,000 cases of serious lung diseases in people who vape. Some chemicals in vapes are classified as carcinogens and are linked to cancer at alarming rates.  Vaping doesn’t just affect the person vaping; it affects the people around them. There have been cases of accidental consumption of e-juice in children and even adults that led to acute nicotine poisoning. Vaping also harms a growing fetus.

Not only is vaping dangerous because of what it does to the body, its dangerous because vaping devices are prone to “explode, malfunction or catch fire”. This is due to defective batteries or cheaply made vaping devices.

Lightspeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

FAFSA Updates for Seniors and Their Parents/Guardians

There have been several technological challenges with the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)since its launch on December 31, 2023. The latest news is that colleges will not get FAFSA summaries from the U.S. Department of Education until mid-March at the earliest. As a result, colleges won’t be able to give students financial aid award letters based on their FAFSA information until late April to May, at best. Students who applied to a college that uses the CSS Profile may receive financial aid information sooner.

Different media outlets are reporting a growing list of colleges that will push back deadlines for students to accept offers of admission into May and even June. The American Council on Education has a database of colleges and universities that have extended their deadline to commit to enroll. We recommend that all information obtained by a secondary source be confirmed directly with the college or university.

If you are a caregiver or student with questions or persistent issues filling out the FAFSA, consider scheduling a free appointment with our partners at College Access Fairfax. Email [email protected]. All FAFSA help provided by your school or College Access Fairfax is free.

Have You Ordered Your Graduation Yard Sign?

It has been a great week at Chantilly. We have been enjoying the amazing spring weather both inside and outside of the building and it has been fantastic to see our Chargers connecting in the outdoor lunch and classroom spaces and in action in spring sports and activities!. We are just one week away from the end of the third grading period AND spring vacation! We are looking forward to celebrating and sharing our appreciation for our Chargers through a spirit week next week. March 20 is Virginia Student Appreciation Day and we are going to be celebrating ALL week with spirit days and lunch activities. We LOVE our Chargers!

Principal Evaluation Survey Coming to you next week!

I value your feedback! On Monday, March 18, Chantilly HS parents/guardians will be sent an email containing a link to complete the online FCPS Principal Evaluation Parent/Guardian Feedback Form. This questionnaire is part of the VDOE-mandated Performance Evaluation Program for principals and offers parents/guardians an opportunity to provide anonymous input about various topics related to our school. These topics include how the principal demonstrates/impacts instructional leadership, school climate, management, communication and community relations, culturally responsive and equitable leadership, and professionalism within the school.

The questionnaire will be administered between March 18 and April 5. When you receive an email from FCPS Surveys, please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire. Your feedback matters!

What a wonderful week to be a Charger!  A few highlights:

  • We welcomed members of our class of 2028 to our Charging Up Activities Fair today. Rising 9th graders from Franklin and Rocky Run middle schools got a taste of our Chantilly spirit during their visit and were introduced to the building, activities, and athletics opportunities. Tonight the two schools will match up in basketball games in our gym. I am grateful to all of our student leaders who did an awesome job welcoming our new Chargers to our awesome school community.
  • Cake Wars presented by our Chantilly SGA was a DELICIOUS success! Over 20 cake, cupcake, and cookie entries were tasted by students and staff in a fun competition that benefitted our Culinary Arts program. I was amazed by the creativity on display in the variety of flavors and decorating shared by our Charger chefs!
  • Student Voices were heard loud and clear in several opportunities to engage with students this week. I held the first meeting with our Charger Cabinet, a representative group of students from grades 9-12, and our Leadership classes to hear their feedback and concerns. We discussed our current challenges and students shared suggestions for improving our bathroom access, and refining our Learning Seminar and Charger Connect periods. And one of our students shared her Chantilly experience with Superintendent, Dr. Reid and Chief Equity officer, Dr. King when they visited Chantilly earlier this week.

As always, I welcome your feedback, questions, and suggestions. Please share with me here. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

A Message from Your SAPS ~ Is Vaping Dangerous?

Vaping has become very popular, especially with young people ages 12+. The number of lung- related issues is rising and its just going to keep rising. A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

This week we recognize the outstanding contributions of our Chantilly Social Workers,  Amy Deemer, Anna Ghafoori, and Nick Thayer during National School Social Work Week. We are grateful to have such amazing champions for our students and families on our staff. Congratulations to Nick Thayer who was awarded the Social Work Impact Award on March 6, 2024 after being nominated by Amy Parmentier, DSS. March is National Social Work Month and Nick epitomizes this year’s theme - “Inspiring Action, Leading Change”.  Nick definitely Leads the Charge at CHS and we are grateful to him for his support of our CHS community.  Click here to read the recognition.

It was a great week of learning and connections with Chargers. A few highlights:

  • Thank you to our Equity Lead Teachers, Ms. Mohrbacher and Mr. Steck for leading a field trip to the Holocaust Museum and African American History Museum with our student equity leaders.  We had an outstanding day in the Nation's Capital learning and reflecting on history and our future together. Thank you also to Ms. Rollet for serving as a chaperone. I am excited to reflect on our experience with our student leaders and discuss impact in our Charger community.
  • The Virginia State Choral assessments have been hosted this week at Chantilly HS by our music department with our Choral Director, Evan Ayars leading the charge!  It has been an outstanding event with amazing music including the performances of our very own Chantilly Choirs.  Bravo!
  • Scholastic Art Awards were held earlier this week at the Ernst Cultural Center at NOVA.  114 Chantilly Visual Art Pieces were recognized for their excellence. 31 of those pieces are Gold Key Recipients and will be headed to the National level Competition. Congratulations to our Visual Arts team of Ms. Choi, Ms. Mull, Ms. Thomas, and Ms. Simmons and all of our amazing artists. I had the pleasure of celebrating the critical and creative thinking on display with our students and staff.

New Regulation on Meditation and Silent Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division. The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are in our Chantilly Library for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact their subschool administrator regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

As always, I welcome your feedback, questions, and suggestions. Please with me here. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

Charging Forward - for Seniors: Charger Headlines: A Message from Your SAPS ~ Is Vaping Dangerous?

A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

Is March coming in like a Lion or a Lamb...is spring really here or are we in for another dose of winter? I cannot believe we are seeing spring flowers already AND talking about Cherry Blossom Peak just a few weeks away. As March begins and our thoughts turn to spring, I can't help but reflect that exactly one year ago today I officially joined the Chantilly Charger community as principal. As I reflect on my first full year, I feel very grateful to be able to serve our outstanding school community and for all of the support you have shared with me and the connections we have made together this year.  As we move into spring, I will be reaching out to you to engage and gather your feedback to help guide our future course as a school community. Opportunities to connect in person, virtually, and online through feedback forms will be offered, so that we may collaborate to identify our common beliefs and collective commitments as families, students, and staff to drive the future vision of Chantilly HS.  As always, I thank you for your partnership and support and I am energized by our future work!

A few highlights from this week:

  • We enjoyed a visit from our two new School Board Members Anderson (Springfield) and Dixit (Sully). Together we walked the building and visited classrooms to highlight our outstanding programs and share our facilities challenges. I am looking forward to a positive partnership with our board to advance the needs of Chantilly HS.
  • Spring athletics are upon us! This week I had the opportunity to watch our Girls JV and Varsity Lacrosse Scrimmages earlier this week and celebrate two big wins to kick off their season. I wish all of our teams good luck as their seasons begin and I look forward to cheering on all of our athletes and spring activities participants.
  • Wishing our Model UN and DECA students the best of luck as they move on to local and state competitions this weekend. I am looking forward to celebrating their successes!
  • Music is alive and vibrant in our Chantilly Pyramid. It has been a joy to hear our talented musicians from our feeder schools play and sing in their state pre-assessment concerts over the past week. I wish all of our band, choir and orchestra students the best of luck in their upcoming performances.
  • The countdown to graduation is on! It was a pleasure to connect with so many of our class of 2024 families and students at our 100 Days to Graduation meeting this week. We cannot wait to celebrate our graduates on June 7 at 9:30 AM at Eagle Bank arena.

✅ Look for the FCPS Family Engagement Survey This Sunday

Parents/caregivers will receive the FCPS’ Family Engagement Survey Sunday, March 3, from independent research firm K12 Insight. Please participate — your feedback is critical in helping to inform and improve practices to best support our students. Taking this survey will also help strengthen the partnership between your family and our school. When that partnership is strong, students can experience a range of benefits including improved school readiness, higher student achievement, better social skills and behavior, and an increased likelihood of graduating high school. The survey will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and will be available in 10 languages. Please visit the Family Engagement Survey webpage for more information. Your voice matters!

Spring 2024 SEL Screener March 1 during LS 8

Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:

  • Self-Management & Responsible Decision Making
  • Social Awareness & Relationship Skills
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Supportive Relationships
  • Belonging
  • Cultural Awareness & Action *grades 6-12 only
  • Challenging Feelings

Chantilly HS students who were not opted out will complete the Spring Wellness Screener on March 1, 2024 during LS 8.  We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early May. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Once we have an updated timeline, we will provide communication via this weekly message.  For more information, please visit this webpage.

Academic Advising Mini-Conferences (rising 10-12th grade only)

Academic Advising is in full swing at Chantilly HS, and we’re excited to offer mini-conferences for families this year.  These conferences provide the opportunity for students and parents to meet briefly with their school counselor for the purpose of face-to-face discussion around course selections for the 24-25 school year. The intent of these conferences is to both:

1) provide additional opportunity for school-home partnering around academic advising

2) improve accuracy of staffing needs before decisions impacting teachers must be made in March.

Eating Disorder Parent Information

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

Dear Charger Families,

Happy Friday!  Wishing each of you a relaxing and fun long weekend ahead as we recognize President's Day on Monday, February 19. I am currently away from school taking a brief vacation and will return to Chantilly on February 21.  During my absence, Kristi Layman, Assistant Principal for SS4 will serve as Acting Principal. Please reach out to her or any of the members of our administrative team for assistance.

Student Drop Off Reminders - Kindercare, West Lot and Door 4:

We are very grateful to our community neighbors for often sharing their spaces with Chantilly including Kindercare and the Chantilly Regional Library. Please note that while students may park in numbered Library and West Lot spaces assigned to them, general parking at Kindercare, West Lot, and the Library for drop off / pick up of students is not permitted.

  • Please follow all signs for Kiss and Ride and drop off locations if driving your student to school.
  • If your student is dropped off at Door 4, you must continue around the building to exit at the light at Stringfellow Road. Do not U-turn!
  • Do not drop off/pick up students in West Lot, Kindercare or along Stringfellow Rd.  Safety is our priority.
  • Kindercare will be reporting violators to the Fairfax County Police and you will be ticketed or towed.

Thank you for assisting us in supporting a safe and orderly arrival and dismissal at Chantilly HS.

It is great to be a Chantilly Charger! This week:

  • We celebrated Friendship February with staff by surprising secret pals with treats throughout the week! Students recognized each other through flower grams sponsored by our SGA. It has been wonderful to feel the "love" in our community!
  • Congratulations to SS5 Assistant Principal Maura Edwards and her family as they welcomed a baby girl into the world earlier this week. Brigid Louise Edwards was born on February 12. Mom and baby are doing great! Ms. Edwards will be on leave through Memorial Day.  Amanda Lombardi will serve as SS5 Acting AP during her absence.
  • Thank you to our Chantilly PTSA for hosting an important workshop for parents and caregivers on the health impacts of vaping and tobacco use on teens. We appreciated the opportunity to engage with our Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist (SAPS), Stacey King on this important health issue.
  • Good luck to all of our athletes and students engaged in performing arts and co-curricular activities as they compete in state, region, and district tournaments and competitions this weekend!  See the Recognitions section below for some additional highlights.

The mini-conferences will be held on:

  • Monday March 4 between 8:30-11 and 1:45-3:15 and
  • Wednesday March 6 between 3:30pm-6:30pm

It is important to us that each student takes courses that are challenging for them while also allowing for balance between academics and outside demands and interests.

If you sign up for a spot and your plans change, please be sure to delete your appointment so others can use that time slot.  We look forward to collaborating with you and your child and we begin our preparations for the 2024-25 school year.

Notice of Mandatory Immunization for Rising 12th Graders

In accordance with state and local law, FCPS requires students entering 12th grade to have received a dose of Meningococcal ACWY vaccine AFTER the age of 16. Doses received prior to age 16 do not count towards this requirement. If your student’s dose was received prior to age 16 they will need another dose. Immunization records must be submitted to the Student Services office before August 1, 2024 to allow time to update student records before the start of school. Immunization records can be delivered to the main office to the attention of Liz Fisher, Registrar, OR your student may hand deliver the record to her in the Student Services office (next to Subschool 3). Please contact Liz Fisher at [email protected] with any questions.

Chantilly's Got Talent, Winners

Charger Headlines:

National School Counseling Week February 5-9! School counselors are engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; work in partnership with families as they encounter challenges of raising children in today’s world; focus on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an education system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience make them an integral part of the total educational program. As the number of students with mental health concerns continues to skyrocket post-pandemic, our counselors and clinical team are working in close collaboration with teachers and families to help kids return to wellness and academic engagement.

Our commitments to our students, families and faculty are:

  • Chantilly HS Student Services Department encourages every student to find their voice and explore their strengths and interests so that they are equipped to lead fulfilling, healthy, and productive lives
  • The mission of CHS Student Services Department is to prepare students to succeed as learners and as global citizens.  We work collaboratively with parents and teachers to support each student as they find their pathway through high school and beyond
February is National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month.

Chantilly High School proudly offers CTE courses in the content areas of Business & Information Technology, Marketing, and Technology & Engineering.  Each content area supports a Career & Technical Education Student Organization (CTSO) including DECA, An Association of Marketing Students, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and Technology Student Association (TSA).  Click here for more information.

  FREE WEBINARS IN FEBRUARY

Mindspring Mental Health Alliance is hosting the following free Webinars during the first half of February:

Understanding High-Functioning Depression | February 7th, 1 - 2 p.m.

The official diagnosis for high-functioning depression is persistent depressive disorder or PDD. The symptoms are similar to major depression but less severe, and many people with PDD can maintain a relatively normal level of functioning. However persistent fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration, and feeling hopeless puts people at higher-than-average risk for suicide and self-harm, and symptoms can continue indefinitely without treatment. Discuss the signs and symptoms, what causes it, and who is at risk in this seminar with a licensed therapist. Learn how PDD is treated, how lifestyle changes can help, and how to support loved ones with PDD.

A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

Our Chargers are off to a great start in the second semester! The building has been alive with activity and energy as students have jumped into the second half of the school year. Let's keep the momentum going and focus on excellent attendance and effort.  Please see our updates about semester 1 attendance and grades below.

It has been a pleasure to connect with and celebrate student work over the past week. A few highlights:

  • School Spirit Pep Rallies: Thank you to our SGA Leadership students who led the CHARGE and engaged our student body in fun class competitions and recognized our Winter athletics, activities and accomplishments.
  • Science Fair Success: Our Chantilly Science fair was a HUGE success with over 180 entrants and support from a large community of world class volunteer judges. Kudos to our amazing Science department for hosting this outstanding showcase of innovation and invention.
  • Teachers for Tomorrow: I was honored to serve as a guest speaker in our Teachers for Tomorrow classes. I appreciated the opportunity to share about my journey to education and the impact teachers and school leaders have on the lives and future trajectories of students. I am excited to hear our students' reflections on their upcoming field placements.
  • Community Theater: Congratulations to our theater department for sharing their live performance of Choose Your Own Oz to our friends from Greenbriar West Elementary earlier this week. Bravo!!!
  • Go Chargers!: It's been a busy week of competition for our winter athletes. Congratulations to our Class of 2024 Boys Basketball Seniors!. We wish the best of luck to our Track and Field and Wrestling teams as they compete at Districts, Swim and Dive at the Region Finals, and Charger Dancers at Nationals!

1st Semester Snapshot of Student Grades and Attendance

Next week, parents and students will receive an email that is a snapshot of a student’s grades and attendance from 1st semester. This information is helpful for all stakeholders as we support student success at CHS. Every day counts! Did you know that regardless of the reason, a full day absence can impact a student's overall attendance status, and more importantly their learning and growth in school?  After you receive this information, please reach out to your child's administrator, counselor and/or teacher if you have any questions.

  • Every Chantilly student will be getting an attendance report card for their first semester.
  • Report cards will include the student’s attendance status (CA -Chronically Absent, At risk to be chronically absent, or Not at risk)
  • CA status is defined as missing more than 10% of the school year for any reason, EXC or UNX.  Excused absences add up!  Please plan extended trips during school breaks and holidays.
  • CA rate only considers full day absences, and is based on a 180-school day year meaning missing 18 days or more will cause a student to be CA. (this can be as little as just 2-3 days per month)
  • CA rate does not impact graduation directly, however being chronically absent has a significant negative impact on student learning and success.

We appreciate your continued support!  Review our Attendance Policy.

As always, I welcome your feedback, questions, and suggestions. Share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

A note from Dr. Goodloe

Dear Charger Families,

It is hard to believe that today marks the end of the first semester of the 23-24 SY.  I continue to be so proud of the hard work of our teachers and students as we all focus on learning and growth! We hope that all of our students and families enjoy the extra time to recharge and refresh ahead of the start of the third quarter on Monday, January 29.  While the building is quiet without our Chargers on site, it is alive with work from our partners from Allegra Printing, Guernsey furnishings, and student volunteers to refresh our gym lobby (see above), library, and Innovation Lab spaces. Be sure to check out the new additions the next time you visit Chantilly.

It has been a wonderful week to be a Charger as our community has connected, competed, and celebrated.  A few highlights:

  • Chantilly Academy Air Force JROTC Dining Out: It was my honor to attend and share remarks at this annual change of command and awards celebration. I am in awe of the tight knit community that is our JROTC program and the commitment and spirit demonstrated by our students and their amazing leaders Chief Master Sergeant Clemmons, Lt. Colonel Lambert, and Academy Administrator Mr. Settar.
  • Athletics: Senior Nights: This week Chantilly celebrated our seniors on our Wrestling and Gymnastic teams. Congratulations to all of our class of 2024 athletes and to both teams for big wins this week! District Competitions began today for Swim and Dive and Theater One Acts. It was a pleasure to see our students perform at Oakton HS in the One Act entitled Reunions written and directed by Ms. Spicer. I am looking forward to cheering on our swimmers and divers at tomorrow's finals.  Good Luck Chargers!
  • Dulles Art Walk: Four of our amazing artists were celebrated at a ceremony recognizing the selection of their pieces for a gallery at Dulles Airport. We are so proud to see our Chargers recognized in the community!

Chantilly Staff Updates:

I wanted to share a few staffing updates that have occurred over recent weeks. Mr. Tim O’Reilly, SS2 Assistant Principal (Last names: Hi-Man), continues to be on medical leave, and Ms. Amanda Lombardi has stepped in as the interim AP.  Effective 2/16, Ms. Maura Edwards, Assistant Principal in SS5 will be on maternity leave, and will return around Memorial Day.  During that time, Ms. Amanda Lombardi will fill the AP position in SS5 and Ms. Christine Sciabica will be the interim AP in SS2.  Ms. Sciabica is a retired FCPS AP, who most recently served at Rocky Run MS and knows many of our Chargers and families. We are grateful to our staff for supporting one another and our students and families during these transitions and we appreciate your partnership.

As always, I welcome your feedback, questions and suggestions. Please reach out to me at any time. Share your observations, suggestions, questions and celebrations with me here. I look forward to connecting with you at Chantilly very soon.

The Wizard of Oz meets Choose Your Own Adventure in this fresh and fast-paced retelling of the L. Frank Baum classic in which the audience plays playwright and gets the chance to change everything from Dorothy's footwear (silver slippers or ruby red...clown shoes?) to Toto's species (lion, tiger or octopus?—oh my!) to the Witch's flying footmen. A delight for children of all ages, Choose Your Own Oz reminds us all that at the end of the day, there really is no place like home. Charger Headlines: Academic Advising Mini-Conferences (rising 10-12th grade only)

You must reserve a spot through Signup Genius (see link below). One spot per student.

Directions:

  • Use the embedded sign-up genius link.  Find your student’s counselor and your preferred time slot
  • Choose the 10-minute time slot that works for you.
  • In the “My Comment” section that comes up after you choose the desired time, please put your student’s name and then hit “Sign Up Now”.
  • If you have more than one student at Chantilly, you may sign up for a second slot. Please put a different student name in each time slot.

If you sign up for a spot and your plans change, please be sure to delete your appointment so others can use that time slot.  We look forward to collaborating with you and your child and we begin our preparations for the 2024-25 school year.

Our new Student Innovation Lab Team has put together a list of supplies needed for our Innovation Lab. Donations can be dropped off in the Main Office or library. Please contact librarians Kristen Zemba ([email protected]) or Kristen Schoenberger ([email protected]) with any questions. Thank you!

💲 Soft Launch of a New Financial Aid Form

Colleges and career schools use the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form to determine how much financial aid each student is eligible to receive. This aid could include grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans.

Any college-bound student — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form.

The form is currently available for short periods of time while it is being updated to provide a better experience. Learn more about the 2024–25 FAFSA form.

No Cost Therapy for High Schoolers

High school students can access virtual mental health services at no cost through an FCPS program with Hazel Health. Hazel Health therapists are licensed and also trained in teen-specific challenges.

Students can be referred by a guardian or designated staff member and participate in weekly video therapy sessions. The therapists will work with students until they achieve their therapy goals, or they can help connect the family with long-term mental health services in the community if needed.

Learn how to opt your students into this service.

Inclusive Open Gym

Sully Community Center welcomes the teens with disabilities and their parents and/or caregivers to join us for Open Gym every second Friday of the month! This will be a monthly drop-in session of basketball, pickleball, and badminton, from 7:00-8:30 every second Friday.

This program begins in January!

All that's required is a free* Neighborhood and Community Services Membership. Need help creating one? We are glad to help!
