Academic Advising/Course Selection Timeline of Events

As we approach winter break, it is time to start planning for Academic Advising and course selection for the 2025-26 school year. To help students and parents make their best decisions about course selections, we are offering additional opportunities for students to receive more information and feedback from teachers about course requirements.  We want to maximize student strengths and interests while helping them to maintain balance and adequate time for social connections, jobs, sports, volunteering, time with family etc.  Each department is providing students with detailed course progression information including the differences between standard, honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses.  Individual teachers will offer mini-student conferences to help students reflect on areas of success and growth.  From January-March, students will meet individually with their counselor to review course selections and alignment with diploma type, post-secondary plans, or other priorities students may have around course selection.  In early March, parents and students will be invited to a mini conference with the student’s counselor to review selected courses and ensure course selection is correct.  Signups for the mini conferences will be available in late January.  After March 7, 2025, we will be unable to make any additional class changes as we make staffing and course offering decisions in mid-March based upon student course selections. Below is information for your review.

November 12, 2024 - January 10, 2025 - Teacher Presentations & Mini-Conferences

Teachers provide students with information about next year’s course options, expected workload in those courses, and any prerequisite skills. Teachers also meet briefly with each student to answer student questions and provide necessary information to aid students with their decision.  

December 10, 2024 - Course Videos, Course Catalog, and Academic Advising Site   available for student and parent review.  Also available on the Chantilly HS Webpage

January 8, 2025 - Curriculum Night for Families

5:00 - 5:45 - Introduction to Chantilly HS (Library) This program will be presented in the library and will be offered in English, Korean, and Spanish. It is geared towards parents/guardians whose home language is not English.

6:00 - 6:45 - Welcome to Chantilly HS ( Auditorium) This program will be presented in English and is geared towards parents of rising 9th graders. It includes staff introductions, course progression and balance, and a student panel. Spanish and Korean translations will be available. 

7:00 - 8:00 PM - Curriculum Fair (Library, Lecture Hall, and Cafeteria) Rising 9th-12th graders and their parents are invited to learn more about the course offerings at Chantilly HS and Chantilly Academy by talking with students and teachers.

January 10 & 16, 2025 - Curriculum Fair for rising 10th-12th graders during Homeroom

March 3, 2025 - 3:30-6:30 PM & March 5 - 1:30-4:30 PM - Parent/Student Mini-Conferences to review course selections. Limited to one per student, these are optional and available by sign-up only.  Sign-ups will open in February. 

March 7, 2025 - Course Selection Deadline - Students may not make any schedule changes after 3:30 PM.  Students planning to take a summer class(not recommended) must enroll and notify their counselor by March 7.  Failure to do so may result in a lack of seats in a needed course.

Science Fair

We are seeking volunteers to serve as judges for the local and regional science fair. Chantilly fair is scheduled for January 23, 2025 and the regional fair is March 22nd at Robinson Secondary School.  As a judge, you'll review student projects, ask questions, and provide constructive feedback to help inspire and guide the next generation of young scientists. NOVA’s Early Online College is back for the Spring 2025 Semester! 

NOVA Early Online College (EOC) allows current high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take up to 2 tuition free college courses.

Fourteen different courses are being offered in the Spring 2025 semester. Courses are asynchronous, online, and for college credit only. These courses run for 12 weeks. EOC courses are selected because they meet the requirements for most of NOVA’s Associate degrees as well as being highly transferable as general education requirements for most colleges and universities. Students must meet eligibility requirements (GPA or available test scores) to take EOC courses.

New Textbook Policy: Some EOC courses require a textbook. Students will be automatically enrolled in NOVA ALL ACCESS ($22.50 per credit hour). Students may make the payment for course materials in their myNOVA account or opt out and purchase the course materials on their own. Review details about NOVA All Access so students can make an informed decision.

Dear Chantilly Chargers Community,

The holidays are upon us, and the spirit of the season is definitely charged up here at Chantilly! We're thrilled to be enjoying a December to Remember packed with exciting events, festive cheer, and opportunities to connect and celebrate together. Here are a few highlights from this week:

• Chantilly Market Days:  Our students and staff enjoyed the opportunities to browse through unique holiday crafts, delicious treats, and festive finds at our student-run market. It was a perfect place to find one-of-a-kind gifts and support our talented young entrepreneurs. Read more on our website.

• Tiny Tots & Holiday Spectacular Performances Dazzled: Chantilly's performances for our future Chargers in the Tiny Tots shows and the superCHARGED holiday magic of the Holiday Spectacular shows wowed audiences. It is not too late to see our talented performing arts department in action! Come join the Chantilly tradition on Friday Night at 7 PM. Ticket information above.

• Winter Sports Season in full swing!: The Chargers are hitting the track, mats, and courts and are CHARGING ahead to victory! Come out and cheer on our incredible winter sports teams as they compete with passion and dedication throughout the next week and into Winter Break. Schedules and information about ticketing are available on the Chantilly Athletics website:

• Family Coffee Recap from 12/5: Thank you to the many families who attended our most recent coffee and shared in the discussion about Academic Advising. Arrival and Dismissal Accountability and Safety Reminders

• On Wednesday, December 18, we will be implementing a new tardy check-in system using Securly Pass to account for student arrivals. There may be delays for students who arrive after 8:10 AM (tardy bell) arriving in class. Please arrive to school prior to 8:10 AM to avoid being tardy.
• All students who arrive at school after 8:10 will be directed to Door 1, enter through the new Security vestibule, and will visit a kiosk to receive a pass to class. This is a new process and there will be delays!
• Late arrivals due to traffic are unexcused. Student drivers and drop-offs are encouraged to arrive in the school parking lot by 7:45 AM to avoid delays.
• Please report late arrivals or early dismissals to your student's subschool by 9:30 AM to avoid attendance messages and ensure passes are delivered on time.
• All pedestrians should use the marked crosswalk at the stoplight to safely cross Stringfellow Rd. from West and Library parking lots.

The safety and accounting for all students are priorities. Thank you for your assistance!

As we celebrate the holidays, let's not forget the true spirit of the season – giving! We are incredibly grateful for the generosity and support of our amazing Chantilly community. Whether it's volunteering your time, donating to a worthy cause, or simply spreading holiday cheer to those around you, your kindness makes a difference. Be sure to stay up to date on social media for fundraisers and events for our Boosters organizations, PTSA, and many student organizations.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener Results

Students in grades 3-12 took the SEL Screener during the month of October, providing information on their SEL skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships, and making responsible decisions. The screener also asks students how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

Individual student SEL Screener results are now available to families in the Documents section of SIS ParentVUE. For families who do not have an active ParentVUE account, results will be sent via postal mail.

For support in understanding your individual student’s results or for ideas on how to support them at home, please review the Family Guide or reach out to our school staff with any questions.

Sick Students leaving school - Reminders

• The student MUST check out of school through the clinic before leaving school grounds because of illness. (Please do not call your student’s Subschool to dismiss your student for illness). We have seen an uptick in students contacting their family directly, rather than checking out through the clinic. Please remind your student to go to the clinic with a pass when they are feeling ill, as this helps with the safety and security of our school.
• When a student is sent home or a doctor’s attention is required, the SUBSCHOOL OFFICE will be notified at the end of the day by the clinic. (Attendance will be updated accordingly)

We have so much to celebrate in our Chantilly community and we are grateful for your trust in us to care for your children. I know over the coming two weeks we all are looking forward to winter athletic competitions and performances by our amazing Chargers. We hope to see you at Chantilly very soon!

Congratulations to Elaine Gonzalez, French teacher at Chantilly, who was honored to receive the FCPSCares award this month.  

Ms Elaine Gonzalez of Chantilly HS and Ms Jocelyn Smith of Westfield HE collaborated to bring 22 exchange students from France to us. We loved hosting the students, learning from them and showing them our lives. The school worked with a fantastic company to make this happen, the French students had activities planned every weekday and spent a really amazing time touring DC. For my child and family to experience this was phenomenal. The teachers went above and beyond to make this an excellent experience. I would highly recommend FCPS to continue sponsoring and working with the teachers to offer this program

Academic Advising/Course Selection Timeline of Events

As we approach winter break, it is time to start planning for Academic Advising and course selection for the 2025-26 school year. To help students and parents make their best decisions about course selections, we are offering additional opportunities for students to receive more information and feedback from teachers about course requirements.  We want to maximize student strengths and interests while helping them to maintain balance and adequate time for social connections, jobs, sports, volunteering, time with family etc.  Each department is providing students with detailed course progression information including the differences between standard, honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses.  Individual teachers will offer mini-student conferences to help students reflect on areas of success and growth.  From January-March, students will meet individually with their counselor to review course selections and alignment with diploma type, post-secondary plans, or other priorities students may have around course selection.  In early March, parents and students will be invited to a mini conference with the student’s counselor to review selected courses and ensure course selection is correct.  Signups for the mini conferences will be available in late January.  After March 7, 2025, we will be unable to make any additional class changes as we make staffing and course offering decisions in mid-March based upon student course selections. Below is information for your review.

November 12, 2024 - January 10, 2025 - Teacher Presentations & Mini-Conferences

Teachers provide students with information about next year’s course options, expected workload in those courses, and any prerequisite skills. Teachers also meet briefly with each student to answer student questions and provide necessary information to aid students with their decision.  

December 10, 2024 - Course Videos, Course Catalog, and Academic Advising Site   available for student and parent review.  Also available on the Chantilly HS Webpage

January 8, 2025 - Curriculum Night for Families

5:00 - 5:45 - Introduction to Chantilly HS (Library) This program will be presented in the library and will be offered in English, Korean, and Spanish. It is geared towards parents/guardians whose home language is not English.

6:00 - 6:45 - Welcome to Chantilly HS ( Auditorium) This program will be presented in English and is geared towards parents of rising 9th graders. It includes staff introductions, course progression and balance, and a student panel. Spanish and Korean translations will be available. 

7:00 - 8:00 PM - Curriculum Fair (Library, Lecture Hall, and Cafeteria) Rising 9th-12th graders and their parents are invited to learn more about the course offerings at Chantilly HS and Chantilly Academy by talking with students and teachers.

January 10 & 16, 2025 - Curriculum Fair for rising 10th-12th graders during Homeroom

March 3, 2025 - 3:30-6:30 PM & March 5 - 1:30-4:30 PM - Parent/Student Mini-Conferences to review course selections. Limited to one per student, these are optional and available by sign-up only.  Sign-ups will open in February. 

March 7, 2025 - Course Selection Deadline - Students may not make any schedule changes after 3:30 PM.  Students planning to take a summer class(not recommended) must enroll and notify their counselor by March 7.  Failure to do so may result in a lack of seats in a needed course.

Science Fair

We are seeking volunteers to serve as judges for the local and regional science fair. Chantilly fair is scheduled for January 23, 2025 and the regional fair is March 22nd at Robinson Secondary School.  As a judge, you'll review student projects, ask questions, and provide constructive feedback to help inspire and guide the next generation of young scientists. Federal Impact Aid

The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify: 

• Military families.
• Federally connected families.
• Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form. The Federal Impact Aid Survey is available to complete in ParentVue. For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student on November 22. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

NOVA’s Early Online College is back for the Spring 2025 Semester! 

NOVA Early Online College (EOC) allows current high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take up to 2 tuition free college courses.

Fourteen different courses are being offered in the Spring 2025 semester. Courses are asynchronous, online, and for college credit only. These courses run for 12 weeks. EOC courses are selected because they meet the requirements for most of NOVA’s Associate degrees as well as being highly transferable as general education requirements for most colleges and universities. Students must meet eligibility requirements (GPA or available test scores) to take EOC courses.

New Textbook Policy: Some EOC courses require a textbook. Students will be automatically enrolled in NOVA ALL ACCESS ($22.50 per credit hour). Students may make the payment for course materials in their myNOVA account or opt out and purchase the course materials on their own. Review details about NOVA All Access so students can make an informed decision.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

• Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
• Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
• Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
• Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
• A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
• Alcohol or drug use.
• Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family. 
• Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Click here for staff contact information to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness. 

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Parents/caregivers no longer need to opt in their child to receive Hazel Health’s teletherapy services. This will make the referral process easier for families. Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide them with a safe space to address concerns such as:

• Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
• Anxiety, worry, fears
• Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships
• Academic stress

You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting our school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.

Construction at Chantilly

If you have visited Chantilly HS recently, you may have noticed that there are few areas under construction. Finishing work is underway on two new classrooms that we expect to have ready for students following winter break. A new Security Vestibule inside door 1 is in the final stages and will be an added measure of security during school hours.

Science Fair

We are seeking volunteers to serve as judges for the local and regional science fair. Chantilly fair is scheduled for January 23, 2025 and the regional fair is March 22nd at Robinson Secondary School.  As a judge, you'll review student projects, ask questions, and provide constructive feedback to help inspire and guide the next generation of young scientists. Federal Impact Aid

The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify: 

• Military families.
• Federally connected families.
• Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form. The Federal Impact Aid Survey is available to complete in ParentVue. For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student on November 22. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

NOVA’s Early Online College is back for the Spring 2025 Semester! 

NOVA Early Online College (EOC) allows current high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take up to 2 tuition free college courses.

Fourteen different courses are being offered in the Spring 2025 semester. Courses are asynchronous, online, and for college credit only. These courses run for 12 weeks. EOC courses are selected because they meet the requirements for most of NOVA’s Associate degrees as well as being highly transferable as general education requirements for most colleges and universities. Students must meet eligibility requirements (GPA or available test scores) to take EOC courses.

New Textbook Policy: Some EOC courses require a textbook. Students will be automatically enrolled in NOVA ALL ACCESS ($22.50 per credit hour). Students may make the payment for course materials in their myNOVA account or opt out and purchase the course materials on their own. Review details about NOVA All Access so students can make an informed decision.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

• Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
• Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
• Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
• Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
• A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
• Alcohol or drug use.
• Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family. 
• Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Click here for staff contact information to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness. 

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Parents/caregivers no longer need to opt in their child to receive Hazel Health’s teletherapy services. This will make the referral process easier for families. Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide them with a safe space to address concerns such as:

• Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
• Anxiety, worry, fears
• Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships
• Academic stress

You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting our school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.

Theatre at the Rock presents You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, a musical based on the comic strip “Peanuts” by Charles M. Charger in Good Standing

We have CHARGED into quarter two with great attendance, and engagement in classes and activities. This week, quarter one attendance report cards were sent to all students, progress reports posted to SIS, and letters about Chargers In Good Standing were distributed. Student progress in academics, attendance, and behavior is monitored and communicated to students regularly. A Charger in Good Standing is a student achieving C or higher in all classes, and an individual who Leads the CHARGE through their behavior and positive attendance. Positive attendance is defined by the number of full day and class period absences (excused AND unexcused). We recognize that there may be questions regarding the communication and the criteria, and that sometimes we make mistakes. If you or your student has a question about being a Charger in Good Standing, please reach out directly to your school counselor or subschool assistant principal.  You can find information below to help with contacting the subschools. 

Cheer for the Chargers!

It has been a pleasure to recognize the great successes of our students this week as our fall athletic seasons wrap up. This week we celebrated 14 student athletes who will continue their academic and athletic careers in college on our Signing Day. We look forward to cheering on our Football team at Madison tonight in the Region playoffs, Boys Cross Country in the State meet at Oatlands and Girls Volleyball in the State quarter-finals tomorrow. And don't forget to get your tickets for our fall Musical, Matilda, which opens on Thursday, November 21. Ticket information is below. Let's Go Chargers!

Attendance Matters!

We're thrilled to share that our school's current chronic absenteeism rate is at 9%, which is a decrease of 10% since the end of last school year! This is a significant achievement, and we want to thank you for your ongoing commitment to your child's education!

To maintain this positive momentum, we want to continue to emphasize the importance of regular, in-person attendance for your child's academic success. Consistent attendance allows students to fully engage in learning, build relationships with their peers and teachers, and develop essential skills.

While we understand that family vacations are important, with the holiday season approaching, we kindly request that you avoid adding extra days before or after long weekends or holiday breaks. These additional absences can significantly impact a student's learning and contribute to our school's chronic absenteeism rate regardless of being excused.

By continuing to prioritize in-person attendance, we can further improve our school's academic performance and create an even more positive and productive learning environment for all students.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey

Our school has been selected to participate in a pilot program for FCPS’ Student Experience Survey. This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

We will administer the survey in selected classes during the school day between Monday, December 2, and Friday, December 13. Any student may take the survey at home, if preferred. You have received email communication with details on how to preview the survey and opt your child out, if you choose. Please contact the main office with questions.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan, which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

Moving on to Life in the Community Resource Fair!

This event is designed for students with developmental and intellectual disabilities who will need continuing support after they exit FCPS.

Each fall, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB), and the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) sponsor Moving on to Life in the Community: A Resource Fair. This event is designed for students with disabilities and their families to speak to adult agency and vendor representatives to gather information about available services for adults in need of ongoing support once they transition from FCPS. NOVA’s Early Online College is back for the Spring 2025 Semester! 

NOVA Early Online College (EOC) allows current high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to take up to 2 tuition free college courses.

Fourteen different courses are being offered in the Spring 2025 semester. Courses are asynchronous, online, and for college credit only. These courses run for 12 weeks. EOC courses are selected because they meet the requirements for most of NOVA’s Associate degrees as well as being highly transferable as general education requirements for most colleges and universities. Students must meet eligibility requirements (GPA or available test scores) to take EOC courses.

New Textbook Policy: Some EOC courses require a textbook. Students will be automatically enrolled in NOVA ALL ACCESS ($22.50 per credit hour). Students may make the payment for course materials in their myNOVA account or opt out and purchase the course materials on their own. Review details about NOVA All Access so students can make an informed decision.

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

• Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
• Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
• Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
• Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
• A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
• Alcohol or drug use.
• Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family. 
• Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Click here for staff contact information to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.

No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Parents/caregivers no longer need to opt in their child to receive Hazel Health’s teletherapy services. This will make the referral process easier for families. Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide them with a safe space to address concerns such as:

• Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
• Anxiety, worry, fears
• Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships
• Academic stress

You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting our school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.

International Travel Opportunities for Students

Join us on Tuesday, November 19 at 6:30 pm in the Chantilly High School Lecture Hall to learn about exciting travel opportunities for students. The agenda will include an overview of the benefits of international travel, general information about the options chaperoned by CHS teachers, and an opportunity to ask questions about specific itineraries. Dear Charger families,

It is great to be a Chantilly Charger!  On behalf of the entire Chantilly Faculty and staff I want to thank you for sending us your engaged, compassionate children each and every day. We have had a smooth start to the school year and a strong finish to the first quarter. Please encourage your students to take the time over the long weekend to rest, reCHARGE, and be ready for quarter two. We look forward to seeing our Chargers back in school on Wednesday, November 6.

Highlights from this week:

• Best Buddies Trunk or Treat was a huge success and an awesome event that built community connections and friendships. Thank you to all of our volunteers, staff and families who attended (pictured above).
• Congratulations to our Mighty Marching Chargers who achieved Superior ratings in their most recent competition. We are so proud of our Charger Cheer Team who placed second in the Northern Region Competition and advanced to the VHSL State competition on November 9. 
• We were proud to welcome visitors from Korea to Chantilly and Chantilly Academy this week and sign a Memorandum of Understanding for an ongoing partnership between our academic programs.
• It was a JOY to hear the voices of our Chantilly Choirs and our future Chargers from all of the Chantilly Pyramid Schools as they presented two outstanding pyramid choral concerts this week. 
• Visiting classes to see great learning is one of my favorite parts of the week. Thank you to our math department for hosting a visit from our partners in the Office of School Support in several classrooms and showing off the great learning that is happening at CHS.

Attendance Matters! Did you know that one of the measures by which Chantilly is rated and measured as an effective school is our attendance rate? Full day absences, both EXCUSED and UNEXCUSED impact our school accreditation. We know at times students need a break, families have events, and students are sick. Please note that Senior Skip days are not sanctioned and are not excused.  

• Please consider the natural breaks in the school year for family events and trips and avoid adding extra days. 
• Work with your subschool administrator on an attendance plan if your student is anticipating an extended absence.
• We will be contacting families about flexible instructional time students can access after school, on holiday breaks and Saturdays to improve attendance.
• Encourage your student to try to make it for part of the day if they express they need a day off. Every minute counts.

Federal Impact Aid

The Federal Impact Aid Survey will be available to complete in ParentVue starting on Monday, October 21st. The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify: 

• Military families.
• Federally connected families.
• Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form. For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

Moving on to Life in the Community Resource Fair!

This event is designed for students with developmental and intellectual disabilities who will need continuing support after they exit FCPS.

 

Each fall, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB), and the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) sponsor Moving on to Life in the Community: A Resource Fair. This event is designed for students with disabilities and their families to speak to adult agency and vendor representatives to gather information about available services for adults in need of ongoing support once they transition from FCPS. Agency representatives will be available to share information on adult service providers, employment and training programs, Medicaid, Social Security, residential options, and The Arc of Northern Virginia.

It has been another awesome week to be a Chantilly Charger! We are thrilled to announce that Chantilly HS received the Purple Star Designation Award, which recognizes schools for being a welcoming and supportive place, especially for our military connected students. Congratulations to CHS!

A few highlights from this week:

• We had an outstanding turnout of Seniors for our college visits from Northern VA Community College this week.  Students engaged with staff from NVCC to explore post-secondary opportunities and form connections.
• I held the first meeting with our Charger Cabinet - Principal's Advisory Council.  Students representing grades 9-12 shared their positive feedback about Chantilly's programs, activities and student supports. This group will be an important link to student voice and advocacy for school improvement.
• Congratulations to our Chantilly Charger Co-ed Cheer Team who competed in the Concorde District Finals earlier this week. They have achieved their third District Championship in four years and now move on to Region competition on Saturday.  
• Be sure you read the Charger Headlines below for additional updates and upcoming events!

9th Grade Parent Program - Monday October 28, 6:30-7:30 PM in the Auditorium

Your child’s 9th grade year is well underway, and we want to continue to build our connections and community with parents and guardians.  Please join us for a program featuring information about Chantilly HS, helping your child find balance throughout high school, and information and resources about mental health supports available at Chantilly HS.  All 9th grade students will complete the SOS(Signs of Suicide) program on November 14 and we will share information about this program as well. While this program is geared specifically towards parents of freshmen, any Chantilly HS parent or guardian is welcome to attend

Veteran's Day Celebration on November 12.

The Air Force Band “Maximum Impact” performed in our auditorium on Thursday for CHS students!

Charger Headlines:

Mighty Marching Chargers competed last weekend in the Oakton Classic, earning a score of 92.55 and 1st place in class and 3rd overall of 29 bands.  Additional recognitions included class awards for Best Music, Best Visual, Best General Effect, and Best Percussion.  Congratulations MMC!

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

• Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
• Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
• Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
• Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
• A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
• Alcohol or drug use.
• Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family. 
• Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Click here for staff contact information to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness. 

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Parents/caregivers no longer need to opt in their child to receive Hazel Health’s teletherapy services. This will make the referral process easier for families. Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide them with a safe space to address concerns such as:

• Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
• Anxiety, worry, fears
• Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships
• Academic stress

You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting our school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.

Upcoming Family Engagement Events:

9th Grade Parent Program - Monday October 28, 6:30-7:30 PM in the Auditorium

Your child’s 9th grade year is well underway, and we want to continue to build our connections and community with parents and guardians.  Please join us for a program featuring information about Chantilly HS, helping your child find balance throughout high school, and information and resources about mental health supports available at Chantilly HS.  All 9th grade students will complete the SOS(Signs of Suicide) program on November 14 and we will share information about this program as well. While this program is geared specifically towards parents of freshmen, any Chantilly HS parent or guardian is welcome to attend

Veteran's Day Celebration on November 12.  

We are looking forward to recognizing and sharing our gratitude for the Veterans in our Chantilly community on November 12 at 1:30 PM. Please see the graphic above and RSVP.

A few highlights from this week:

• What teachers do on School Planning Days? On Monday, October 14, our amazing Charger Faculty was engaged in professional learning together on the topic of Universal Design for Learning, specifically how to design instruction to ensure access for ALL learners to succeed.  We also enjoyed a treat from Bruster's Ice Cream and time to connect with colleagues. While students are resting, we are refreshing our practices and relationships!
• It was a pleasure to host visitors from FCPS Instructional Services Department earlier this week. A team of staff visited our building to observe our positive school culture and the diverse programs at Chantilly through classroom visits. I am always so proud to show off our school. Our visitors saw amazing things going on in Science - Chemistry classes, Adapted Curriculum and Academy classrooms (Cosmetology, Vet Science and Construction).
• SEL screener: Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. • It was a big week for Charger Athletes: Two of our Seniors played in the VA Golf State match. Patrick O'Rourke and Connor McCarthy qualified and competed in the VHSL 6A State golf tournament at Landsdowne. Congratulations! Chantilly Co-ed Cheer finished as the highest seed in the first round of the District competition and will complete on 10/23 in the finals. And we continue recognizing our seniors this week at Field Hockey and girls and boys volleyball next week.
• We wish the best of luck to our Mighty Marching Chargers as they compete at Oakton HS on Saturday!

Federal Impact Aid

The Federal Impact Aid Survey will be available to complete in ParentVue starting on Monday, October 21st. The Federal Impact Aid program provides money to districts that enroll federally connected students. Help FCPS secure funding from the Impact Aid Program by helping us identify: 

• Military families.
• Federally connected families.
• Families living on a military base.

Please complete one form for each child in your household. Remember that only the enrolling parent can fill out the Impact Aid Survey form. For families without access to ParentVUE, a paper copy of the form will be sent home with your student starting November 12. Your information will be kept strictly confidential.

Your support will ensure that we receive the resources for which we are eligible.

🎓 Help Your Student Prepare for the Future at College Fair and Postsecondary Nights

The annual FCPS College Fair will be held on Sunday, October 20, at George Mason University’s Eagle Bank Arena, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Approximately 220 colleges and universities will be represented, including two- and four-year schools and U.S. Service Academies. 

Following the fair, a two-night Postsecondary Virtual Event will be held on Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. Both events will help students be better prepared for the next chapter of their educational journey. Dear Charger families,

We had a SuperCHARGED full week at Chantilly. We continue to be so proud of the level of engagement and social interaction observed in classes and during activities and lunches from our Chargers. One of our most impactful programs for fostering student belonging and connection is our Peer Mentoring Program. Student Leaders in Grades 11 and 12 participated in mentor training this week and are prepared to facilitate community and connection building lessons with their grade 9 Homeroom buddies throughout the year. The peer-peer collaboration continues to foster an environment of support and safety for our newest Chargers. 

A few highlights from this week:

• Our schoolwide PSAT/SAT day on Wednesday was smooth and supportive. Students came in prepared and ready to test and our staff ensured our testing environment was positive! Make-up testing will take place on 10/22.
• Thursday, October 10 was World Mental Health Day. We celebrated at Chantilly with our first Wellness Fair of the year. All students and staff had the opportunity to take a well-needed break by participating in choice activities both inside and outside. It was a JOY to walk along our track with students and staff and observe many playing soccer, kickball, and corn hole. Many students enjoyed visiting with service dogs and the Squeals on Wheels petting farm, while others created in Arts and Craft or socialized while playing games. Physical and Mental health breaks are important for our overall wellbeing. We look forward to additional Wellness Fairs throughout the year!
• We continued celebrating our Charger Class of 2025 through fall athletics senior recognitions. I had the pleasure of attending our Cross Country team's senior meet at Burke Lake Park this week and watched outstanding runs by our Chargers.  Congratulations.
• Attendance Matters!!! Today our Senior attendance is lighter than on a typical day. Please note that there are no "excused" or official Senior Skip Days. Every student's full day absence, excused or unexcused, impacts individual student and schoolwide chronic absenteeism rates, which impact school accreditation. We know that at times students need a break. We encourage all families to discuss attendance and monitor absences closely. We also ask that students attend school daily, and even for a part of a day whenever possible. Please visit our attendance website for more information.

Free Immunizations for All FCPS Students

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost! Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment and provide consent for their student(s). The next immunization clinic will be held at Frost Middle School on:  

• Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Students under the age of 19, with a scheduled appointment and parental consent, must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or another adult over the age of 19. 

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 in order to provide consent.

Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:

Chantilly HS students who were not opted out will complete the Fall Wellness Screener on October 17, 2024 during homeroom .  We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early December. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Chantilly Academy, Criminal Justice Leadership students are running a supply drive for the victims in North Carolina, and Southern Virginia from Hurricane Helene.  They will be collecting items from the list below, until Thursday, 10/17, drop off items in room 574A.  These donations will be going to local aid groups with the supplies going directly to families that have been impacted. Dear Charger families,

It has been a wonderful week of connecting with students and families at Chantilly. A few highlights:

• Today, October 2, is National Custodian Appreciation Day. We are so grateful for the hard working and committed team of custodians who ensure that Chantilly is welcoming, clean, and safe at all times.  Thank you!
• On Thursday, September 26 members of our Chantilly Choir (pictured above) performed the National Anthem at the FCPS School Board Meeting.  You can review meeting highlights and watch the recording here. Thank you to our amazing singers and Choral Director Evan Ayars.
• We are looking forward to recognizing members of our Class of 2025 at this Friday's Home Football game against South Lakes HS. Senior recognitions and celebrations for our Athletic Trainers, Band, Cheer, Dance, and Football teams will take place on the field before the game beginning at 6:15 PM.  We hope that our community will come out to help us celebrate our Chargers.
• Please review the important calendar reminders for upcoming student holidays on October 3 and 4 and next week's PSAT/SAT day on October 9. There will be no school on 10/9 for 9th and 12th grade students who are not testing and an early release for those testing at 12:55 PM. Details included below.

Charger Headlines:

PSAT/SAT Day

Chantilly HS(along with all FCPS high schools)  will administer the PSAT and SAT on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. 

• All 10th and 11th graders will take the Digital PSAT. 
• Only registered 12th graders will take the Digital SAT. 
• All 9th graders and 12th graders NOT taking the SAT DO NOT report to school. 

For students who are testing, we will operate on a two hour early dismissal; students will be dismissed at 12:55.  Students who are testing MUST bring their FCPS issued Chromebook fully charged and a charger.  We will not have loaner computers or chargers except for students who do not have a FCPS issued device. 

High school academy courses will not be held on October 9, 2024, and all high school shuttles are canceled for the day. High school academy staff will support based school activities.

Free Immunizations for All FCPS Students

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost! Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment and provide consent for their student(s). The immunization clinics are being held at Frost Middle School on:  

• Tuesday, October 8, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
• Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Students under the age of 19, with a scheduled appointment and parental consent, must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or another adult over the age of 19. 

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 in order to provide consent.

Fall Immunization Clinic at Chantilly HS

Chantilly HS will host a School Site Immunization Clinic on October 18, 2024, in collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD). Only students enrolled at Chantilly may participate in the clinic.

The following immunizations will be offered during school hours at the School Immunization Clinic: 

• Meningococcal Conjugate (MenACWY) Vaccine
• Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine
• Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis (Tdap) Vaccine

Find additional information for each vaccine. 

There are a limited number of appointments available. If you would like your child to receive immunizations as part of the School Site Immunization Clinic, you must first provide: 

• Permission via a signed Adolescent Vaccine Clinic Consent Form, which can be found in the Middle and High School Clinics section on this webpage.
• A copy of their immunization records (if available).
• A copy of the front and back of their insurance card (if applicable). Insurance is not required. 

Please bring your signed consent form to our front office as soon as possible but no later than October 11, 2024, for your child to participate. If your child is insured, please submit a copy of the front and back of your child’s insurance to our front office as well. Once we receive the above documents, we will contact you to confirm your child’s appointment, pending availability. You may contact our school’s public health nurse, Karen Reyna Estrada at [email protected] with any immunization questions.  

🎓 Help Your Student Prepare for the Future at College Fair and Postsecondary Nights

The annual FCPS College Fair will be held on Sunday, October 20, at George Mason University’s Eagle Bank Arena, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Approximately 220 colleges and universities will be represented, including two- and four-year schools and U.S. Service Academies. 

Following the fair, a two-night Postsecondary Virtual Event will be held on Monday, October 21, and Tuesday, October 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. Both events will help students be better prepared for the next chapter of their educational journey. • 🎤 Our Schools, Our Future: Register Today for a Community Conversation! 

Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid will host a series of Community Conversations this fall. She invites you to share your thoughts and ask questions. Click the dates below to register for any of the following conversations:

• Monday, October 21, at Virginia Run Elementary School.
• Wednesday, October 30, at Herndon Middle School.

Fall 2024 SEL Screener

Students in grades 9-12 use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success.

The screener measures student skills, strengths, and needs across the following topics:

• Self-Management & Responsible Decision Making
• Social Awareness & Relationship Skills 
• Emotion Regulation
• Supportive Relationships 
• Belonging 
• Cultural Awareness & Action *grades 6-12 only
• Challenging Feelings 

Chantilly HS students who were not opted out will complete the Fall Wellness Screener on October 17, 2024 during homeroom .  We are anticipating families with SIS ParentVue accounts will see results in early December. Families without ParentVue accounts will receive results via USPS as they have in years past around this time. Once we have an updated timeline, we will provide communication via this weekly message.  For more information, please visit this webpage. 

Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office. 

Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health

Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:

• Increased irritability, hyperactivity, energy, and/or aggressive behavior.
• Excessive sadness, hopelessness, or worries.
• Loss of appetite, or significant weight gain or loss.
• Lack of sleep or too much sleep.
• A decline in grades, school avoidance, or attendance concerns.
• Alcohol or drug use.
• Withdrawal from activities and/or friends and family. 
• Thoughts of harming themselves or others.

If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Click here for staff contact information to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness. 

If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

No-Cost Virtual Therapy for High School Students

Parents/caregivers no longer need to opt in their child to receive Hazel Health’s teletherapy services. This will make the referral process easier for families. Virtual therapy sessions are available to FCPS high school students at no cost to provide them with a safe space to address concerns such as:

• Mood/behavior changes, motivation, grief/loss
• Anxiety, worry, fears
• Social skills, bullying, peer and family relationships
• Academic stress

You may refer your child by calling 571-749-2940 or by contacting our school counselor, social worker, psychologist, or director of Student Services.

World Languages Credit by Exam 24-25

The World Languages Credit by Exam tests students’ proficiency in language other than English.  Students who take this exam may earn up to three world languages credits for the language of the exam.  Beginning this school year, students in grades 7-12 are eligible to be tested in November at their school during the school day using a computer based Avant Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency(STAMP). 

In order to take the exam, this form must be completed, signed and returned to the school counselor between September 4 and October 4.  Late registrations will not be accepted.  Please review information regarding this exam linked here.
